1 Enter r adicals for the co
m
ponent of the characte r that contains the
m
ost s trokes. Enter
the radicals for the first radical, second radical, third radical, and last radical. If the sa
m
e
radical appears twice in this sequence only enter it once.
2 You can use a single radical for a co
m
ponent of a character that consists of several s trokes.
Although this
m
ay
m
ean so
m
e of th e strokes of the co
m
ponent are not entered in the
correct orde r, it re duces the nu
m
ber of radicals required to define the character.

e Chinese char acters have a ce ntral co
m
ponent with other co
m
ponents on the left
and right side. If the co
m
ponents on the sides are sy
mm
etrical, enter the radicals for the
central co
m
ponent first, then the outside co
m
ponents. If they are not sy
mm
etrical, enter
the radicals fro
m
left to rig ht.
4 If the inner co
m
ponent is co
m
pletely surrounded by other strokes, enter the radicals for
the outside s trokes first, then the inner co
m
ponent.
5 If the inner co
m
ponent of a character is surrounded by other stroke s but there is an
opening in the surrounding st rokes, follow these r ules:
a If the opening is to the left, right , or botto
m
of the inner co
m
ponent, then enter the
radicals for the outside strokes first.
b If the opening is at the t op, then enter the radicals for the inner co
m
ponent first.
c If the surrounding strokes are open on two sides with a radical on the upper-left or
upper-right, then enter the radicals for the o utside strokes first.
d If the surrounding strokes are open on two sides with a radical on the botto
m

-right of the inner co

ponent, then enter the radicals for the inner co
m
ponent
first.
