Accessing information services and your company’s intranet

You can access a range of information services using your Newton device and third-

party applications, including

m Telnet

m File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

m newsgroups

m Internet-Related Chat (IRC)

From outside the office, you can also call into your company’s intranet for access to

corporate systems and databases.

Features of the NIE software

NIE offers the following features:

m LocalTalk and MacIP support

m Ethernet support (including support for DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration

Protocol)

m support for TCP and UDP protocols over PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) or SLIP

(Serial Line Interface Protocol)

m a domain name resolver

m a dialer with scripting capability

m support for PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) and CHAP (Challenge

Handshake Authentication Protocol) authentication

m SecurID

card support

To use NIE, you should be familiar with basic Newton functions (described in the

documentation that came with your Newton device).

Requirements

You can connect to the Internet using NIE in several ways: using an Ethernet or

AppleTalk network, using a modem, or using a serial connection. There are several
